The Power of Love
The power of love can be both magical and mysterious. It can take you to highs you never dreamed of and lows you never want to experience again. It can even save your life.
I was thinking about the power of love recently at my son Matt’s wedding reception. He and his wonderful wife Brooke got married in 2020 during COVID. It was a very small ceremony at a church for immediate family only. They couldn’t have a bigger wedding or a reception because the pandemic was surging. But they really wanted to celebrate their love in style and with their loved ones and many friends present. They had to wait almost two years but wow, was it worth it! They threw a big wedding party, complete with a full wedding entourage, flowers, and a photographer. It was amazing!
Back in the early 80’s, before Matt and Brooke were born, Huey Lewis and the News wrote the song The Power of Love for the movie Back to the Future.
The lyrics are great.
You don't need money, don't take fame
Don't need no credit card to ride this train
It's strong and it's sudden and it's cruel sometimes
But it might just save your life
That's the power of love
That's the power of love
But do be glad baby when you've found
That's the power makes the world go 'round
It just might save your life. That's the power makes the world go 'round. What true words. The right kind of love from the right person makes you feel wonderful and gives you the courage to be all you can be.
As I thought about the power of love before the wedding party and prepared to enjoy my mother and son's dance with Matt, I reflected on how his wife’s love had changed him and how love has the power to transform people into the best versions of themselves. I have felt that powerful love with my partner and I’ve seen that powerful love in each of my children’s lives. The right partners help you to grow and evolve throughout your lives in the best of ways.
Having complete, unconditional love from your partner, knowing they will always show up for you, knowing they believe in you, trusting them completely, and hearing “I love you’s” and other messages that make you feel like the most important person in their world – all of these things are powerful forces that make you feel great about yourself and give you the confidence to go out in the world and live your best life. I’ve seen Matt grow and change in so many wonderful ways while he has been with Brooke. He’s matured into a capable and confident man who is very comfortable in his skin. He’s become more relaxed and outgoing, and he’s been letting his amazing sense of humor shine through. It still catches me off guard to see some of his hilarious Instagram posts about what life is like for him as a dentist. (Believe it or not, you can actually be a personable and humorous dentist!)
I watched Matt at the wedding as he worked his way through the guest tables greeting and thanking people. I watched him later as he stood with a group of fraternity brothers, and he looked so relaxed and happy and comfortable being the center of attention. I watched him laughing on the dance floor with friends and co-workers. I watched the love in his eyes as he looked at his wife throughout the evening. And I felt his love as we danced together on the dance floor for our song, while I teared up and told him how much I loved him and who he was. I told him I was grateful for Brooke’s secure love and the power it had to help him be who he was always meant to be – the best version of himself.
